FAVUS Fungal Infections in Broiler Poultry

FAVUS (WHITE COMB) Fungal Infections

Favus is an economically less important fungus disease which occurs sporadically. It is caused by Trichophyton magnini.

Symptoms and Lesions

The combs of the affected birds show deposition of thin, white, flour-like material. Slowly, this layer spreads to other featherless parts of the body. Later, the deposits slough off from the skin. Infected skin becomes thickened. At times, infection may spread to gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract. In the trachea necrotic foci may develop with the formation of yellowish material. Immunity does not develop against favus, hence the disease persists quite often, over a long period of time.

Spread

Infection spreads from one bird to another by direct contact.

Host

Favus affects birds of all age groups and the birds which are kept under poor managemental conditions. It may also affect turkeys and human beings.

CANDIDIASIS Fungal Infections in Broiler Poultry

CANDIDIASIS (THRUSH)Infections

This disease is also economically not very important. It affects birds and human beings sporadically. It is caused by fungus Candida albicans. It forms cream-like colony on Saboraud’s agar. Monilia albicans also produces similar lesions in some birds.

Host 

Candidiasis can be seen in chicken, turkeys, guinea fowls and other caged birds at the onset of the summer season. Morbidity rate may reach 100 per cent. The disease mostly affects young birds of age group between 10 days and 8 weeks.

Candidiasis Symptoms 

Birds show stunted growth, ruffled feathers and loss of appetite. In acute outbreaks chicks may die without showing appreciable symptoms.

MUCORMYCOSIS Fungal Infections

Chickens are less susceptible to mucor infection. Pneumonic lesions in the chickens may be caused by Mucor resimosus or M. chorimbifer. Some species of mucor may cause infection in the eyes and vertebrae in chickens. According to one report, infection of mucor, penicillium and aspergillus has been reported to occur through contaminated litter. After removal of contaminated litter the disease declined in 4 days.

Fungal Diseases

Fungal diseases are relatively less prevalent in poultry. Mostly these diseases occur sporadically but at times they may take the form of outbreaks. Of the all mycotic diseases, aspergillosis and candidiasis are more important. Following are the important mycotic diseases that can affect birds. Other fungal diseases included in this chapter occur very rarely.

The four important diseases are listed below:
1. Aspergillosis
2. Mucormycosis
3. Candidiasis
4. Favus

1. ASPERGILLOSIS (BROODER PNEUMONIA) 

This disease mainly affects the respiratory system, but sometimes infection may spread to other visceral organs also. Aspergillus fumigatus is the most common etiological agent. Other species like A. flavus, A. nidulans, A. glaucus, A. niger and A. candidus have also been found related to the disease.

Symptoms

Clinical symptoms depend on the site of infection. If respiratory system is affected then dyspnoea, depression and emaciation develop with loss of appetite and increased thirst. In turkeys, eyes may get affected resulting in inflammation and accumulation of cheesy materials under the eye lids. Brain is rarely affected resulting in nervous symptoms. Mortality rate is 1-2 per cent in chicks. It may exceed 50 per cent in ducklings and quail chicks.
